Postcomm designated under RIPA
12 September 2003
Under Orders laid before Parliament yesterday, Postcomm became a designated organisation under The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA). Designation will enable Postcomm to continue to monitor mail flows to ensure that Royal Mail and other postal operators are complying with their licences on such things as standards of service and security of the mail.
Up to now Postcomm has carried out these duties under the Postal Services Act 2000. But now Postcomm needs to be designated under RIPA in order to continue this work.
Notes for editors
Under RIPA, Postcomm will have access to data on communications traffic, services and users in order to monitor mail flows. More information on the legal framework applying to Postcomm.
